Early Beginnings and Formation
Nepathya, a name synonymous with Nepali rock music, emerged from the vibrant city of Pokhara in the early 1990s. Three young men, Deepak Rana, Bhim Poon, and Amrit Gurung, shared a passion for music and a desire to express the soul of Nepal through their melodies.
In 1992, the trio decided to form a band, naming it “Nepathya,” a word that signifies the backstage of a theater, symbolizing their ambition to bring hidden stories and emotions to the forefront. Their music blended traditional Nepali folk melodies with modern rock influences, creating a sound that resonated with the youth of Nepal.
The Rise to Stardom
In 1993, Nepathya released their self-titled debut album, which included their breakthrough hit, “Chekyo Chekyo.” The song’s catchy tune and relatable lyrics captured the hearts of Nepalis, propelling the band into the national spotlight.
Nepathya’s music continued to evolve over the years, incorporating elements of funk, reggae, and even jazz into their repertoire. They released a string of successful albums, each one showcasing their versatility and musicianship.
Amrit Gurung: The Soul of Nepathya
Amrit Gurung, the band’s charismatic frontman, became the voice of a generation. His powerful vocals, passionate lyrics, and energetic stage presence captivated audiences across the country. Challenges and Resilience

In 2013, Gurung was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition that affected his mental health and led to a temporary hiatus from the band.
However, Nepathya’s resilience and the unwavering support of their fans kept them going. Gurung sought treatment and managed his condition, eventually returning to the band in 2019. His comeback was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, proving that Nepathya’s music remained as powerful as ever.
A Legacy of Musical Excellence
Today, Nepathya stands as a symbol of Nepali rock music. They have released eleven studio albums, won numerous awards, and performed to sold-out crowds both nationally and internationally. Their music has become an integral part of Nepalese culture, transcending generations and uniting people through the shared language of music.
Nepathya has also been a pioneer in the Nepali music industry, setting new standards of professionalism, quality, and innovation. The band has released 11 albums so far, and has performed in more than 15 countries, including the UK, the US, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and India. Nepathya became the first Nepali band to perform at the Wembley Arena in London in 2013, attracting a crowd of more than 10,000 fans. The band has also collaborated with various international artists and organizations, such as the Finnish group Värttinä, the Israeli singer Shlomo Gronich, and the World Wildlife Fund.
